Trentepohlia Algae

Trentepohlia is a genus of filamentous chlorophyte green algae in the family Trentepohliaceae, living free on terrestrial supports such as tree trunks and wet rocks or symbiotically in lichens. The filaments of Trentepohlia often have a strong orange colour as seen here, caused by the presence of large quantities of carotenoid pigments which mask the green of the chlorophyll. I saw this example of the algae shortly after I had entered the Wai-o-tapu geothermal park near Rotorua on New Zealand's North Island.

Trentepohlia is commonly found in humid climates but also occurs in temperate climates. Patches often obscure signs, posts and inscriptions; one species of the algae is even reported to have been growing on spiders in Queensland. Some 40 species exist and a few can be found in Britain and Ireland.
