Prussian General. He reorganized the Prussian Army under Friedrich Wilhelm III, after its defeat at Jena by Napoleon. Scharnhorst modernized the army and instituted a General Staff and a militia, building the Prussian military into an institution whose reputation was respected around the world for many years. He is sometimes credited with the idea of the Iron Cross award. He was mortally wounded in the battle of Gross Gorschen.
