The Cycle of a Leaf (edited version)
The picture above shows a tree with very few leaves. Translocation, or the movement of nutrients through the plant can explain this. In translocation, nutrients move up from the roots (in the spring) preparing for photosynthesis. It is not until summer when the leaf then produces nutrients using chlorophyll. Then, as the year progresses into autumn, the nutrients and chlorophyll move out of the leaf towards the root because the chlorophyll is no longer needed. Once this occurs the leaves then fall off the branches, and tree become bare, as demonstrated in the picture. Even though the tree's leaves have lost their color, the grass is still green. This is because the nutrients lay dormant in the roots in the ground. In the tree, the nutrients have further to travel, where as the grass in directly in the ground, and much smaller than the tree. Therefore, the grass is able to stay green longer. In the picture taken of the flowers in September, temperatures were still warm and sunlight was more abundant, allowing the flowers to photosynthesize and stay alive and colorful. This process repeats itself every year.
