Alter-Ego: The Other Side
Artist Statement
My name is Rachel and I can perfectly portray what the name Rachel actually means. It comes from the Hebrew word “lamb”. Like a lamb, I can be all fluffy and kind of just there on the outside, but on the inside, you never know what is going on. Usually spur of the moment decisions or even planned out can explain what I mean by not knowing what you see from me. For example, when I got my first camera, I did not know what type of photographer I might want to be, or even if I actually liked taking pictures. But when I starting taking more and more photographs, I knew I really liked the idea of capturing something in a shot and being able to view it over and over again.
The pictures I take can show this unexpected theme as well. I can take pictures that have a lot of meaning to them and at other times, the pictures may not have any connection or attention pulls whatsoever. Some areas of photography I really like such as nature or portraits of people. There is just something about people as single subjects that intrigue me. I do not know what it is, but I constantly take pictures of people and look at specific features or even just the face or gestures that they are making as I snapped the shot. When I take these pictures of people, I want to show others what I find so interesting about the person’s specific traits.
In my self- portrait project, I had to shoot two very contrasting photos. My traditional photo was a portrait of myself standing alone in my cluttered room. This represents me as I show my usual happy smile. In the photo, I did not try to dress up, being comfortable is a main part of who I am. With no make-up on, I feel as though I can show the natural side of myself without worrying what I look like. I enjoy showing the real side of people in portraits like I did in this photo.
In my alter ego photo, I did almost the exact opposite. I made it a point to exaggerate the make-up and hair in the shot. I am not the one to spend hours on my make-up to make myself look better for others. Also, the facial expressions, convey my thought on when people take too much time looking the beat in front of others, they are not able to express how they really feel. I believe it hides real emotion when you “put on a face of another”.
