In March 2019 Timothy Larsen, Jonathan Roff and myself, David Larsen, we made an attempt to hike the Grand Traverse across the top of the Drakensberg. We were joined for the first three days starting at the Sentinal Car Park, by Geoff, Nate and Michael Gould who did the Mini Traverse which peals off the main Traverse at Cathedral Peak descending via the beautiful and airy Bell Traverse. In the end weather, navigational errors and lack of communication with home base meant we got as far as Giant's Castle and then decided to descend rather than continue on to Sani Pass. It had become clear a day or two before that in the nine days we had available, we were not going to get to Bushman's Neck. We were, however, on track for Sani, but having not had communication for three days, we decided to descend and leave a decent hike for Part B of the Traverse that we hope to attempt at a later date, hopefully later in the year when there are fewer Drakensberg thunder storms.
