I’m Still Here ~ John Rzeznik

Boo Radley is no doubt the most misunderstood character in the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” and possibly one of the most misunderstood characters in literature period. What remained overlooked in the early parts of the book was that people thought they understood him simply on the grounds of what other people said, but they never actually tried to understand who he really was. They hardly even viewed him as a person, as more than a convenient topic of gossip. “I’m Still Here” is a song that embodies his perspective with stunning accuracy.

“And I don’t want the world to see me, ‘cause I don’t think that they’d understand. When everything’s made to be broken, I just want you to know who I am,” read the lyrics. And really, is there a better song to describe Boo’s unique relationship with the Finch children? He fears leaving the solace provided by his home, yet he interacts with the kids in the only way he knows how by leaving them small presents in the knot hole of a tree they pass on their way home from school. And even when he finally emerges from his home to save them from a revenge seeking townsperson, he still fears the outside world.

 

Somewhere Only We Know ~ Keane

Towards the end of the book, Scout is looking back on the times she shared with Jem and Scout on their street and their adventures concerning the Radley property. To the reader it’s implied that even later in life, possibly even in adulthood, she would look back on the area as a symbol of her adventurous childhood. Or at least that’s how this reader perceived it.

 

Say (All I Need) ~ OneRepublic

A song to generally sum up the admirable character of Atticus Finch. He never asked for more than he needed and stuck up for what he believed in. Those were hard attributes to maintain back then, yet his beliefs were unwavering. The song describes everything from his strengths to quite possibly how he feels about his kids, who he encouraged throughout the novel in whatever path they chose to pursue. His children come to mind during the pre-chorus/verse saying, “Well bless your soul, you’re a lonely soul, ‘cause you won’t let go of anything you hold,” before going back into the chorus.

 

Hurricane ~ Thirty Seconds To Mars

"Tell me would you kill to save a life? Tell me would you kill to prove you're right?" Boo Radley killed Ewell to save Jem and Scout; Bob Ewell was prepared to murder the Finch children to get revenge on Atticus.
