MacWorld Magazine Plastic-wrapped

A glorious photo this is not. But the story it tells is worth consideration. This is actually 2 photos which I attached in Photoshop, showing how my Macworld magazine subscription arrives at my address in Japan. While reflecting on the enormous inkjet address space that marres the otherwise nice cover (left in my photo), consider that my address is printed on a separate sheet of paper (right in my photo). It therefore makes no sense for this "huge white rectangle" edition of Macworld to be sent to me or any other Macworld subscriber. Instead, the folks at Macworld should be sending its "valued subscribers" the newsstand edition of the magazine, which has a tiny barcode on the front cover. The used to do this in the past for all subscribers, including international subscribers like myself. But they they stopped doing it around 2001 for some reason.

The white sheet of paper with my address printed on it says bci BLEUCHIP INTERNATIONAL in the upper left corner. In the upper right, we see that this shipped from France, of all places (as if France were somehow closer to Japan than the USA).

Be sure to have a look at my Sept. '09 issue photo and my Premier issue photo.

My aim in posting these photos is to general greater awareness of this problem in hopes that more subscribers will complain to the folks at Macworld to change their current cold-hearted design stance toward loyal subscribers (especially subscribers outside the USA who pay considerably more for this otherwise fine publication). As you may expect, I still like the publication (obviously, as I still subscribe to it). Indeed, if I were apathetic toward Macworld, I would have never taking all this time to shoot photos and write about it.

So please let Macworld know your feelings on that enormous white rectangle on the front cover. Please! It's massive size serves no useful purpose other than raising the blood pressure of Macworld subscribers worldwide.

Oct. 2012 UPDATE: I've finally found a way to get around this hated problem. I've cancelled my paper subscription and subscribed to Macworld's Enhanced Digital Edition in iOS Newsstand. It looks superb on my iPad3's Retina display -- far more crisp and detailed than the print edition ever was. I still like paper, but the good of digital on my iPad far outweighs the bad of ditching print.
