An abandoned part of Route 61 that used to pass through the Pennsylvania town of Centralia. Local youth have blanketed the abandoned highway with graffiti,making it a virtual encyclopedia of modern day history. An underground fire began in the coal mines that ran throughout the town in 1962. This slowly drained the town of its last 1000 residents making it a modern day ghost town. Most of the last of the town's residents were evicted by the state in the early 2000's,their homes tore down leaving streets full of sidewalks leading to empty lots.An ornate church was spared and still holds services.The towns 4 cemeteries are still maintained as well and the municipal building with one fire engine remain.
Centralia was the inspiration for the videogame and movie series "Silent Hill".
