Chloride's Famous Dead Ass Saloon
Photographed during my trip to the fun and funky town of Chloride, AZ which is located about 60 miles south east of Henderson, NV. The Dead Ass Saloon is located in Cyanide Springs, a replica of an Old West town in the center of Chloride. I couldn't leave without photographing it!
Chloride, Arizona was "established in the early 1860s (often cited as 1862 or 1863), and got its name from the silver chloride found in abundance throughout the local mountains. It is recognized as the oldest continuously inhabited mining town in the state of Arizona. In addition to silver, the miners found zinc, copper, lead, molybdenum, and turquoise. At one point, there were over 75 working mines and over 2,000 people living in Chloride. It grew from a silver mining camp into a bustling town.
Chloride began to decline after 1893 with the drop in silver prices, although it continued to produce other minerals.
By 1917, the population began to drop, and by 1944, it was nearly a ghost town as mines closed due to lower prices and the impacts of World War II. Unlike many other boomtowns, Chloride never fully emptied, maintaining a small population and holding on as a "living ghost town."
