Old cam follower sitting in the housing. The follower is so destroyed that you can actually see the cam lobe, which has serious wear. The spring and spring lock were actually running against the lobe. This is so common on this engine that every owner that has the 2006-2009 GTI, GLI and audi variants need to have this checked, and/or look/request that VW replace it along with cams, and high pressure fuel pump which are ruined, If they can straighten this out this car will still be a monster. Word is that owenrs and new 'used' buyers will get an extension of warranty for these parts. 120k, 10 years. Good on VW to do this.
