4' x 4' x 4' hole dig

Set the 4ft x 4 ft pattern for the dig

The tower specifications were 3.5' deep x 2' x 2' square. We had 2 problems.

1) Earth is wet and soft in this region (Johnsonville, SC). Water begins to flow at 3' to 3.5' feet when digging into the ground. Though the clay is stiff it will not give adequate support. We had to use a pump to move water after getting this deep.

2) Was my desire to have a wireless (no guy wire) installation as these would interfere with cutting the grass and maintaining the yard. Due to high winds during hurricanes it is not desirable to attach this structure to the home.

The final solution was to dig a 4' x 4' x 4' hole. The bottom 1.0 feet contained loose gravel to promote drainage. The entire structure would also be strengthened by a 5 section rebar cage. The cage upper sections were set about 9 inches apart leaving ~12 inches in the center for the tower base. The bottom of the cage was also constructed of 4' x 1/2" rebar sections.

The 4'x4'x4' holes is the center of a 6 inch deep 8'x8' concrete pad place around the tower. This took ~ 4 cubic yards of structural (5000 psi) concrete to accomplish the entire operation.
