Fresh Produce
Today I attended a meeting at our local food pantry. I toured the warehouse and was shocked to find some pallets with boxes of cabbage, tomatoes and potatoes. I asked how they were able to store this fresh produce without it going bad. The director said giving away fresh fruits and vegetables isn't a problem. People flock to the delivery truck when they have produce to give away. Another person who was with me said she had heard an interview on NPR once where a woman was literally crying with happiness because she was given a fresh pineapple from a food bank. It was the first time she and her family had ever tasted a fresh pineapple.
Can you imagine this? I have been very fortunate to have never experienced hunger. But many others in our community have to deal with this situation daily.
We often take the simple things in life for granted, like the ability to have meat for dinner, or eat multiple times per day if we want.
I am thankful for places like the food pantry and local churches where adults and children can get some much needed food.
If you have these types of organizations in your community, be thankful. And if possible, make some donations. They do some amazing work.
