Trader Joe's

I go to Trader Joe’s to smell the flowers.

Before I was married and had kids I lived very close to one and I went there all the time. I also didn’t cook so pâté and rosemary bread fit the bill just fine.

Now I am a sensible shopper and a master griller that knows where to find a good deal, so Trader Joe’s is an indulgence rather than a way to stock the fridge for a week. Plus the Fresh and Easy around the corner with their sweet parking situation, self checkout and never any lines do just fine for in between Costco trips.

Yet the one thing I can never seem to leave Trader Joe’s without is a bouquet of sweet smelling lilies.

They are right by the door. They greet me when I walk in. They trigger something somewhere in the brain and I can’t resist them.

I have other favorites- pumpkin bread, chocolate ganache cake, shortbread cookies, and mushroom turnovers. The brass bell, a cashier whisking away the basket out of my hands, walking me to an open register, God forbid I should wait. I love all those things. But it’s the lilies that get me every time.
