Vanessa - Photo # 02 in my 100 strangers’ project.
I was attending the Bristol TN/VA Rhythm and Roots Reunion Festival and one of my favorite local bands, Sigean, was kicking things off on Saturday morning. I didn’t know it at the time but there was to be an added attraction that morning. In addition to the great Gaelic music the Stardust Irish Step Dancers were performing too. Irish Step dancing has become popular since the ‘Riverdance’ show.
Vanessa was dancing and the troupe put on a great performance. In addition to her dancing it was her great smile that caught my attention.
After the performance I walked over to compliment the troupe and began talking to Vanessa because I had video of their performance and told them I would send them copies if they would give me their email address. Vanessa was elected, everyone else stepped back.
We talked a bit and I gathered up the courage to tell her about the project and asked her to be my #02 Stranger.
Since I hadn’t planned on shooting any strangers at that point I had not considered background, lighting and since I had been shooting pictures of the band I just hoisted up the camera and shot with the automatic setting.
Lessons learned: (a) always be aware of the area you are shooting in; (b) Take your time and set up the shot; (c) try to be as at ease as your subject. Lots of rookie mistakes here but the subject overcomes them. Thank you Vanessa.
