Upper Geyser Basin is the world's densest collection of geysers and other hydrothermal features in the entire world. It is the site of the famous Old Faithful Geyser, as well as several dozen other, smaller geysers and hot springs. The area is composed mainly of geyserite, a brittle rock formed from dissolved minerals in geyser water, but also includes volcanic rhyolite, indications of Yellowstone's fiery caldera interior and destructive history. The existence of such a large number of geysers owes itself to glacial activity during the last ice age, which carved out pockets for water to seep into.
