143. Yasujiro Ozu: Humidor of the Ephemeral

This commemorative cigar humidor was inspired by the painter and actor Martin Mull (a cigar smoker himself) whose painting process involves projecting images onto the cansas which becomes a dreamscape. In this respect, Mull's paintings are embedded with highly personal symbolism. Ozu artfully used objects as symbols in a significant way, as transitions and technical devices within his films. In my design the humidor would be like such a canvas decorated with those unforgettable objects for true Ozu film aficionados who would have a humidor made to order, depending on which films were one's favorite. In this respect these humidors would resemble modern musical instruments ordered with period decorations like angels, gargoyles or flowers.
A side compartment inside the humidor holds a Director's Viewfinder calibrated to film formats that Ozu used. Also in the side compartment are the usual items in a luxury humidor, a brass hygrometer and a very high-quality humidifying element.
The Churchill or Panatela sizes would be worthy candidates for this humidor, which more than any other advocates spending time to ruminate and meditate upon symbols as they relate to Ozu's eternal themes of family dissolution and the transitory nature of life.
