47844 30/1/03 Crewe Works

47844 is seen at Crewe Works on Thursday 30th January 2003. It had arrived at its birthplace in September 2002 after being rejected from the Class 57/3 conversion programme. It had been due to become 57307 but structural defects were found with it at Loughborough.

As D1583 it derailed at Slough in 1969 and ended up on its side after hitting a BRUTE that had fallen off the platform. It was taken to Crewe Works and repaired before completing another 33 years service. It was donated by Porterbrook Leasing to Bombardier Transportation who had plans to restore the loco as a gate guardian. The work required to bring the erstwhile 47556 up to standard was deemed prohibitive and the project was shelved. It was cut up on site by HNRC in October 2004, the final Class 47 to be disposed of at the site. A spare Class 158 bodyshell and Class 47 bogies complete the scene.
