District Manager Clem Felchle, Helen Sadek & Valley City Hero John Wagner
John Wagner was delivering his route and had just pulled up to a mailbox when he heard a faint, tiny voice calling “help me.” The resident at this address is Helen Sadek, an elderly lady in her 80’s and long time friend of Wagner’s family. Wagner safely parked and secured his vehicle, then found the woman on the ground lying beside her car. She had fallen on the slippery surface and was unable to get up. She said she had tried to get up several times but the icy surface just made her slide farther into the snow. Her clothing was wet from lying in the snow. Wagner said it took some doing to get her up and off the ground; she was cold, wet and had injured her tailbone. Wagner succeeded in helping her into her home, collected her purse and belongings lying around the car, and called for help. He stayed with her for about half an hour, until she said that she would be OK until her family came. She recovered from her bruised tailbone; suffering some stiffness and soreness, but wonders how long she would have been on the ground in the wet and cold had Wagner not come along and heard her.
