Day 3 – 8/10/13 From: Cabane de Pailla (1800m) to Cabane de Groutte (1850m) Distance: Approximately 13km Elevation: Low: 1667m (Lac des Gloriettes) High: 2430m (Hourquettes d’Alans) Accommodation: Cabane de Groutte with fireplace!

Awoke today to another day of clear skies. Packed up and headed off towards the pass D’Alan, the highest point of the walk. It was only a few kms from where we were staying but involved a 600m climb, we made it to the pass and then headed down into the next valley on a very steep descent. Luckily we saw a few marmots on this walk (very fat pre-hibernation). We had planned to stay in the valley but the weather was good and it was early so we continued on past the Lake of Gloriettes. We were now heading off any of the larger more utilised paths which shouldn’t have been too much of a problem. The issue was that the whole area, national park or not is full of sheep and cows making paths wherever they please. The end result was that we took a few unnecessary and steep detours but we made it to the next cabane in the end. Luckily this one had a fireplace as well as a cold mist came in that evening. A toilet break at 2am showed a clear night sky with some of the most amazing stars we have ever seen!
