Last night was the jersey retirement for former team captain Daniel Alfredsson. The ceremony was just perfect, hitting all the right note of reminiscing, story telling, to a great speech by Alfredsson. Here's are two excerpts:
"Ottawa is my home. I learned hockey here. I became a father here. I cried here. I won here. I lost here. I became a captain here. I helped bring awareness to mental illness here. I became a Canadian here. I have shared almost all of the greatest moments of my life with you in this city"
“Tonight, it is not only No. 11 that goes up into the rafters. It is also the Alfredsson family name, and I want to thank the two people that have made this possible ... my Mom and Dad,”
He was an incredible player, having played 1178 games, and with 1108 points. But beyond stats, and accomplishments, he was and continue to be a classy human being. Very fitting that he be the first modern day Sens player to have his jersey retired.
