Our Chariot!

The Tygart Flyer our train ride that we traveled four hours to get to is a restored General Motors Electro Motive Division (EMD) FP7 1,500 horsepower diesel locomotive produced between June 1949 and December 1953. This engine type was used for both passenger and freight service.

The wilderness excursion featured mountain grades, an “S” curve tunnel,(the walls of which were mere inches from either side of the train!) a high bridge and miles of unspoiled mountain views. Lunch was served aboard but you had to go to the diner car where a buffet was laid out and you put your meal together, then they saran wrapped it and put it in a bag for you to carry back to your seat. Sounds easy but was Not! We traversed the length of two cars passing the connections between cars twice. Each car doing it's own thing, it was a slightly daunting prospect! But all was well, lunch was good and the Water Fall we saw at the end of the ride was magnificent. The train goes up then back down for a total of about 4 hours. It was quite an experience! :)
