Mountain Cement Factory

This is the old part of Mountain Cement Company in Laramie, WY. Cement is the glue used to make the concrete. The original factory seen here was established in 1927 by the Monolith Portland Cement Company. Now known as the Mountain Cement Company, they have two limestone quarries, two shale quarries and one gypsum quarry.

Limestone is blended with shale or clay and iron to a desired chemical composition. Then it is ground into a fine powder called raw meal. The raw meal goes into a kiln of about 2,800°F where it changes again into a product called clinker. Clinker is mixed with 5% gypsum and ground into a fine powder called portland cement....and that's all I have to say about that!
