Wall statistics

The Great Wall, which stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east, to Lop Lake in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia, is a complex structure consisting of a network of different walls of differing ages. The section visible here is a branch which left the main section we walked along, followed a spur down and across a valley before turning parallel to us again along the next ridgeline. The Great Wall, with all of its branches, stretches for 5,500 miles and is made up of nearly 4,000 miles of actual wall, over 200 miles of trenches and nearly 1,400 miles of natural defensive barriers such as hills and rivers.
