Keith Hall / Caskieben (1)
This is Keith Hall, a fine mansion house, standing in a large wooded estate only a mile to the east of the town of Inverurie, but with its privacy protected by the River Urie to the west and long drives to north, south and east. I used to live here - not in the 'big hoose' needless to say, but tucked away up the back of the estate in the East Lodge, where I lived happily in sin with my future wife, back in the days when such things still mattered. Well, it mattered to my eventual mother-in-law anyway!
So why, I hear you ask, the interest in such an obviously un-fortified building? The answer is that this, in the words of Nigel Tranter, is a 'Jekyll and Hyde building'! The south front, seen here, was added in the late 17th century to a fine towerhouse, which still survives round the back. And in the next photo, 'we'll ging aroon' the back un' hey a wee keek at it'!
