Freedom Package
I wanted to take a piece of fine art and turn it into a marketable item, therefore a painting became a shower curtain. In the modern world, the city living is very hectic. It forces people to lead stressful lives with a lot of responsibilities. I painted a mix of different colors on the canvas to express the stressful and busy environment and duties that we all have. I then drew a flying bird, representing a person yearning for freedom and wanting to escape from their responsibilities. I tried to covey this through brush strokes- a sense of being trapped and the opposing sense of freedom. The brush strokes fade from very dark black ink to lighter strokes with fading black shades, expressing a fading of restrictions through lightness. The image of the bird’s composition came from the Chinese character (鸟) meaning ‘bird’. I used Chinese characters to create the bird on the canvas so it looked like calligraphy. In doing this painting, I was able to combine Chinese ink brush strokes with poster colors. There is a label on the package that shows the image of the shower curtain.
