The embalmed bodies of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie in their caskets 29 June 1914 view 1 at 450 dpi
The bodies of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Duchess Sophie of Hohenberg, lying in open metal coffins. This photograph was probably taken immediately after the embalming and laying-out, as the coffins have not yet been set on catalfalques but are resting on the floor. This photograph shows a close-up of the dead Duchess, who is wearing a white lace dress with long white kid gloves; like her husband, she is also holding a rosary. Note the bouquet (given to her shortly before her murder) which is resting in the crook of her right arm. Also of note; the Duchess' head is resting on a satin/brocade pillow, while her husband's head is resting on a plain white pillow. Both bodies are covered at waist level by a white silk shroud.
