The sparrows are a family of birds belonging to the songbirds. A total of eight genera with 43 species are counted in this family. The word "sparrow", like the English word sparrow, came into modern German usage from the Proto-West Germanic sparwō via the Old High German word sparo, forming the Middle High German verb spar for 'to wriggle', with the pejorative suffix -ling. Its distribution is predominantly Eurasian and African, with Africa being the centre of distribution. A few representatives of this genus have also been introduced to other continents. For example, the house sparrow, also known as the sparrow, is found in large parts of North America and South America after European settlers deliberately introduced it there. The house sparrow is now also widespread in Australia and New Zealand.

Die Sperlinge sind eine Familie der Vögel, die zu den Singvögeln gehört. Es werden insgesamt acht Gattungen mit 43 Arten zu dieser Familie gerechnet. Das Wort „Sperling“ kam, wie auch das englische Wort sparrow, vom protowestgermanischen sparwō über das althochdeutsche Wort sparo, unter Bildung des mittelhochdeutschen Verbs spar für ‚zappeln‘, mit dem Pejorativsuffix -ling, in den modernen deutschen Sprachgebrauch. Ihre Verbreitung ist vorwiegend Eurasien und Afrika, wobei Afrika der Verbreitungsschwerpunkt ist. Einige wenige Vertreter dieser Gattung wurden auch in anderen Kontinenten eingeführt. So kommt der auch als Spatz bekannte Haussperling beispielsweise in weiten Teilen Nordamerikas und Südamerikas vor, nachdem europäische Siedler ihn dort gezielt eingeführt haben. Auch in Australien und Neuseeland ist der Haussperling mittlerweile weit verbreitet.
