New Wegmans store and shopping center, under construction, in Germantown, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA.
This will be the new, Wegmans Anchored, Shops at Seneca Meadows shopping center, located in the Northeastern part of the unincorporated community of Germantown, in Northern Montgomery County, Maryland, USA, directly behind and across the street from Montgomery County's only existing Wal-Mart store, an about 149,000 square foot Non-Supercenter Wal-Mart that might soon be expanded into an about 167,000 square foot Wal-Mart Supercenter. The Wegmans store itself is visible toward the left of the picture, with Wegmans' signature tall clock tower spire visible in the corner of the store itself (the clock has not been installed yet), and a smaller, clockless spire visible to its right, in the center and front of the store itself. This Wegmans will be the first Wegmans in Montgomery County, Maryland, will be about 123,000 square feet in size, and is scheduled to open in the Fall of this year 2013. The Wegmans supermarket chain is based in the Rochester, New York, USA metropolitan area, and is among the highest rated and most sought after grocery stores in the USA, with most of its current 81 locations, all in the Eastern United States, being packed with customers for most of their business hours. Most Wegmans stores, including this one and all other newer ones, have a "superstore" format in which there is a large, full-service, reasonably priced standard grocery store, a very upscale and expensive organic grocery store, and a restaurant-like cafeteria under one roof, which is why they are usually about two or three times the size of most other grocery stores. Somewhat like a Wal-Mart Supercenter or a Super Target, but with different types of grocery stores, instead of a department store and a standard grocery store, in the same building. There are currently six (6) existing Wegmans stores here in the U.S. state of Maryland, and the Germantown store pictured here will be the seventh (7th) Wegmans store in Maryland. The existing Frederick, Maryland Wegmans store, which opened on June 5, 2011 and was the third (3rd) Wegmans to open in Maryland, is about the same distance (10 miles), but opposite direction, as the under construction Germantown one pictured here, from my house in the Urbana Master planned community in Southern Frederick County, Maryland, USA, and I also took a picture of that one yesterday, and uploaded it to Flickr today. A possible future eighth (8th) Maryland Wegmans store has been approved in the Owings Mills area of Northwestern Baltimore County, but it probably won't be open until the year 2015 at the earliest, since it would be built on the site of a large, vacant industrial plant that must be demolished before construction can start, and the demolition of the old industrial plant will probably last intil the fall of this year 2013. That Future Owings Mills, Maryland Wegmans store also caused considerable controversy, but most of the controversy was instigated by rival developers, not so much the usual neighborhood opposition to such projects, since a majority of area residents would obviously prefer a thriving shopping center over a crumbling, dilapitated vacant industrial plant. I personally believe that the Wegmans development and the rival development, a reconstruction of a dying shopping mall, have the potential to co-exist in harmony, and complement each other in the improvement of the overall area, rather than to "cannibalize" each other through competition. There are many examples of adjacent similar developments complementing each other, and in turn rebranding an area as a major retail destination. Tysons Corner in Northern Virginia, and the Western edge of Maryland's capital city of Annapolis are just two nearby examples of where this has been successful. So, anyway, I would view another nearby development as a positive factor, not as an unwelcome competitor. Germantown is an unicorporated outer ring, Northern suburb of Washington, DC, located in the Northern part of Montgomery County, Maryland, USA. Germantown has a young and very diverse population of about 88,000 people, and is growing relatively fast in population, as the Washington, DC metropolitan area continues to expand outward. Montgomery County, Maryland is located just North of Washington, DC itself, and is currently the most populated county in the Eastern U.S. state of Maryland, with a diverse and relatively fast growing population of about 1.01 million people. Montgomery County, Maryland, USA is the second most populated county in the entire Washington, DC-Baltimore metropolitan area, behind Neighboring Fairfax County, Virginia, USA, which in turn is the most populated county in the Eastern U.S. state of Virginia, as well. Fairfax County, Virginia has a current population of about 1.12 million people, as opposed to Montgomery County, Maryland's about 1.01 million people, and both of these counties are growing at similar, and relative fast, rates in population, and are among the wealthiest, most diverse, and most highly educated counties in the whole United States of America, as well as some of the most continuously urbanized areas in America as well.
