Driving West on the inner, Non-Toll lanes of Virginia State Highway 267, on the way to the Washington, DC Dulles International Airport. Virginia State Highway 267 provides access from the Washington, DC Beltway (Interstate 495) to the Washington, DC Dulles International Airport, as well as to the fast growing suburban areas of Loudoun County, Virginia, further West, ending in the suburban town of Leesburg, Virginia, which is the county seat of Loudoun County. Virginia State Highway 267 is unique in that it is split into two sections between the Washington, DC Beltway and Dulles International Airport. The inner section, with two lanes each direction, does not charge a toll, and is restricted to traffic to and from Dulles International Airport. The outer section, with four lanes each direction, charges a toll, and also provides access to the Dulles International Airport, but continues past the airport into the fast growing suburban areas of Loudoun County, Virginia, ending in Leesburg, Virginia, whereas the inner section ends at the airport. The Washington, DC Dulles International Airport is located in the Virginia side of the Washington, DC metropolitan area, straddling the border between Fairfax and Loudoun Counties in Northern Virginia, but located mostly in Loudoun County. It is one of three major airports in The Washington, DC metropolitan area, with the other two being the Ronald Reagan National Airport in Arlington County, Virginia, directly across the Potomac River from downtown Washington, DC, and Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport, located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, between Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland, but closer to Baltimore, Maryland. The Dulles International Airport is located more toward the outer suburban areas of the Virginia side of the Washington, DC metropolitan area, and, when it was built in the late 1950's and early 1960's, it was many miles away from the edge of development, but is now pretty much surrounded by suburban development, in the heavily urbanized Virginia side of the Washington, DC metropolitan area, known as Northern Virginia, or "NOVA," since it is in the Northern part of the U.S. state of Virginia. The Dulles Airport is surprisingly spread out for a major urban international airport, and this is probably due to the fact that the cost of land in the then rural area was quite low when it was built in the late 1950's and early 1960's, but it is now among the most expensive and fastest growing suburban areas in the whole United States, as well as among the most diverse and family oriented areas as well, with a very young population, on average. Fairfax County, Virginia is the most populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia, as well as in the entire Washington, DC-Baltimore metropolitan area, with about 1.1 million people, and is growing relatively fast in population. Loudoun County, Virginia is located just West of Fairfax County, Virginia, and is among the fastest growing, most diverse, and most family oriented counties is the entire United States, with a current population of about 325,000 people, and growing very fast in population. Loudoun and Fairfax Counties, Virginia are the first and second wealthiest counties, respectively, in the entire United States, as measured by median household income in the year 2011.
