"Mystery" rock... HEAVY!
This rock is something I acquired up in Nova Scotia years ago. The scale indicates a weight of 7.5 pounds... VERY HEAVY for a rock about the size of a grapefruit.
Since 1976 I've visited Nova Scotia once, sometimes twice a year up until 2017. On every trip I spent a day photographing in Advocate (Cumberland County), and on each occasion had lunch or dinner at the Harbourlite Restaurant on RT 209 in East Advocate. This rock sat on a shelf behind the cash register, and on my first visit I asked if I could examine it. The proprietor handed it to me and I was amazed at its crazy weight for its relatively small size. She had no idea what it was, the only information she could provide was that it came from somewhere close to Cobalt, Ontario, an area of very productive silver mining and had been on that shelf for many years. I mentioned that if she ever wanted to part with it I was definitely interested in getting it. On all future visits over the next 35 years the routine was the same... I always asked to hold it so I could look it over... passing it back to her (or who ever was on duty at the register), mentioning to be sure to let me know if they ever wanted to part with it. Around 2009 or 2010 I visited again and was told that the restaurant was closing permanently... the owner was retiring, and the rock was mine. The folks who ran that place were wonderful people, the food was always great, the pies and chowder were outstanding. I hated to see it close, but time marches on. The rock sits in a special spot on my work bench in my computer room. A friend mentioned that I should take it somewhere to have it analyzed to determine whether it's silver, lead, or some other material that could account for its outrageous weight.
