Abandoned grain elevator, Throckmorton, Texas, Iscorama anamorphic
Well... not entirely abandoned, but definitely not being used for its original purpose. Visiting Throckmorton over several weeks during September we found that a multitude of vultures used this old grain elevator and surrounding bins as their roosting spot for the night. Late each afternoon vultures could be seen all around the area making a bee-line for the elevator, each probably looking for a prime perch. We didn't notice which perch locations were occupied first, but the best would seem to be those on the highest part of the structure. We saw a number of white-streaked vultures sitting below their companions, evidently in the "line of fire" for those above who periodically relieved themselves.
This is an interesting place, occupying the block on the corner of South Reynolds and Route 380, about 150 yards southwest of the Throckmorton County Courthouse. Being a vulture bivouac, the area very close to the elevator has a somewhat rank (dead) smell, possibly from droppings, or "meaty bits" dropped by vultures while grooming their feathers after finishing their last meal. Dogs in neighboring fenced-in yards definitely didn't like having anyone prowling around for any reason, sounding like they could be as effective as the vultures at separating flesh from bone.
