Supplemental macro lens test rail
This is a closer view of the test rail shown in a photo posted earlier. A Nikon 105mm f/2.5 AI-S lens is on the camera (Nikon D40), and a Kodak 7" f/3.5 Projection Ektanon slide projector lens is reverse mounted on the 105mm. The Nikon lens is focused at infinity, and the lens ring to glass plate distance is 13 cm. The area just below the horse's eye is centered in the viewfinder. Here's the image taken:

The sliding stage horizontal and vertical lock knobs were loosened, the stage moved to the left until the stage's glass plate had been brought into contact with the ring at the end of the lens barrel. The stage plate had been adjusted so the lens ring was making full contact with the glass. Then the stage's horizontal and vertical locks had been tightened after the bank note was made absolutely parallel with the camera back. The stage had been moved back and the viewfinder image observed as the stage was carefully moved toward the camera again until the image was razor sharp. At that point the slide was locked in position, the set-up then being ready for taking a photo. Working distance is 13 cm.
