1971 NSU Prinz 4L
After taking my ZX to the scrapyard yesterday I caught the bus home. I actually took two but the journey co-ordinated fairly well and I was lucky in only having to wait a few minutes for the first one.
I quite enjoy travelling by bus but rarely do as they're stupidly expensive. The 25 mile journey home cost £9.50! It probably would have been slightly less had I been able to get a through bus, but the two stages were run by different companies. I contrast the costs of public transport round here with the week long use it as much as you want ticket I buy in Malta which costs €21. Anyway....
It's nice to stare out of the window rather than having to concentrate on driving. I hoped I might notice some interesting cars but was getting a little despondent; until I saw this! The bus took a route through a housing estate which I never think of driving through.
I owned a Prinz 4 in 1980. I got it free as a non runner whose MOT was about to expire. The clutch had gone. It turned out the cable had come off....The only thing it failed its MOT on were both headlamps which were rusty. These proved difficult. I was living in London at the time and there were plenty of Prinz' in scrapyards but they all had either rusty lights, or the lights were missing. Eventually I got the glass off a couple without breaking it and glued baking foil onto the reflectors; then refitted the glass. It passed.
I really liked the car. I didn't do any long journeys in it but it was ideal for London. I reckon it would have been fine for longer trips too as the seats were comfortable and it felt quite happy at 65mph.
I was astonished to come across this one. I've never seen it on the road but that's hardly surprising since it's only covered 465 miles since it's first recorded MOT in 2015. It's got 31,000 on the clock which I'd guess is original. I'd also guess it's been restored, or at least resprayed. It looked lovely, and the bright colour really stood out on a dull winter's day.
