Sculpture in Wood
I made this bench for my wife's birthday back in December, 2010. It is built out of wood from Black Locust trees (Robinia pseudo-acacia) that I planted about ten years ago at Distant Hill Gardens. I thought it was a tree native to New Hampshire, but it turns out it is not. It is a southern species that has has been often planted throughout New England for its extremely rot resistant wood. It is proving to be invasive on our property, sending root suckers up many feet from the main trunks.
I resorted to girdling the Black Locust, in an attempt to kill the entire tree including the roots. It didn’t work...there are suckers still emerging everywhere. I plan to keep the area mowed short for a few years in hopes of eventually killing the suckers. My fingers are crossed!
