When EMD produced the 710 engine, they came up with a 12 and 16 cylinder version, producing 3000 and 38000HP respectively. Offered to American railroads in both GP and SD configurations, the 59-series was meant as a replacement for the ageing GP/SD40/-2's out on the mainlines, but the railroad's were overly interested. Norfolk Southern made a purchase of GP59's, but nobody stateside ordered the SD59, while GP/SD60 sales were decent.
Down under, things are a bit different. Both RailCorp, successor to NSWGR, and Australia National ordered variants known as the 82 Class and the DL Class, respectively.
