Condensing Pump

James Joule used this condensing pump to force air into a cylinder, as another way of converting mechanical work into heat in 1844. The pipe for the admission of air is fitted to the lower part of the cylinder; at the bottom of this pipe is a conical valve, constructed of horn, opening downwards. Joule published his results in a paper entitled 'The Changes of Temperature produced by the Rarefaction and Condensation of Air' in 1845.
