Roman engineering at Chesters Fort
This is part of what was the Roman Commandant's house at Chester's Fort in Northumbria. This was one of the forts dotted along Hadrian's Wall in what was one of the northwestern-most frontiers of the ancient Roman Empire. I think that the stubby pillar like structures held up a false floor as part of a Roman underfloor heating system (hypocaust).
