juniper tree
Every place we've lived in the midwest and eastern US, we and/or our neighbors have had juniper bushes, but I had never heard of juniper trees. (Looking online, it appears people talk about eastern junipers, but they are actually cedar trees, not junipers). Last summer I saw this tree in Montana, and as best I could tell from a tree book, it's a western juniper (typical blue juniper berries and needles). It's a fairly ordinary looking evergreen tree from a distance, but its bark is amazing, varicolored and shredded with lots of texture. I love bark, so you'll probably see more of this tree some time in the future.
