Students Participated in Presentation “How to write Statement of Purpose”.
On March 03, 2011 David Mould, Fulbright scholar, the professor of media arts and studies at Ohio University met with students at Astana ACIE EducationUSA Advising Center. Mr. David Mould presented information about the most important part of the application – Statement of Purpose. Admissions committees, told Mr. David Mould, will be looking that the research interest match between student and the program and student’s interests are revealed in the statement of purpose. Student has to show why this program is right for him/her, think about remarkable sing which was the first step to this profession, avoid General statement, and tell Admissions committees how student’s knowledge will improve situation in health or in education, in business, or how new management can help to student’s country. At the end of the Statement of Purpose student is recommended to try to come back to the same points which were stated at the beginning. Statement of Purpose has to reflect student’s own life experience and be focused on particular area of study.
Student is recommended to read carefully about instructions, to write Statement of Purpose, then to put it away, later to show to someone. If student has weaknesses it is student’s opportunity to explain the reasons and to dress them. May be student had difficult time and had bad semester. The best Statement of Purpose is not an academic research. It should be short – 2 – 3 pages - and student should not to claim on something. It should be very consistent. Student has to show how program of study is related with student’s previous experience and future career. Student has to show he/she did a research and explain why he/she has chosen this program. The worst way to start Statement of purpose “I was born” or “I want to study…”. Statement of Purpose could highlight student’s strengths.
Admissions committees has to be convinced this student is the right person for particular program. The task of student is to show what he/she wants to do with this program – for example, to come back to Kazakhstan and to share student’s knowledge with others or give examples of benefits for other people.
Students asked a lot of questions – about catchiest introduction and phrases, attention questions. Mr. David Mould taught it is OK to show student’s emotions, but still Statement of Purpose should be factual story and it will be very good to show personal life connection with the field of study. Student could have 4 – 5 points and the task is to bind them together and to show multiple effects for society. Everything in Statement of Purpose should link with Application Form – why did student choose this University, to show links with particular program of study and to underline the strengths of university.
Also the role of Personal of Statement is very important when student changes his/her field of study. Student has to show he/she set higher goals.
Many students asked about Statement of Purpose for master degree. There was a Public Health question – what tools could be recommended. Mr. David Mould advised to provide a couple of statistics – about modern conditions in Public Health in the Republic of Kazakhstan, live expectancy, access to doctors, clinics for average individual, health impact for these conditions – and to show the power of education for this field.
Students asked about differences between Resume and CV.
Mr. David Mould advised to students to be positive as they can be in their Statement of Purpose and expressed his willingness to do consulting at Astana ACIE EducationUSA Advising Centre at the appointed hours.
Mr. David Mould found some pretty useful tip sheets on writing a Statement of Purpose. They gave pretty similar and consistent advice:
www-personal.umich.edu/~mooreks/sop.html
www.sjsu.edu/faculty/gcallaghan/graduate/winningstatement...
career.berkeley.edu/grad/gradstatement.stm
www.accepted.com/grad/personalstatement.aspx
Students got useful handouts.
There were 26 participants.
