Historical Note fom the Surrendered Potemkin
The dedication written in Romanian on the photo reverse says:
«Souvenir de pe cuirasatul rus "Kneaz Potemkin Tavritcheski" cu marinarii revoltați la Odessa; s-au predat la Constanța 25 Iunie 1905
Ioan Gheorghiu
"Elisabeta" »
Translation into English:
«Souvenir from the russian battleship "Kniaz Potemkin Tavritcheski" with the seamen revolted in Odessa; they surrendered in Constanța the 25th of June 1905
Ioan Gheorghiu
"Elisabeta"»
The story: the mutiny on the Battleship "Kniaz Potemkin Tavritcheski" ("Prince Potemkin of Tauris") began the 10th of June 1905; it was one of the most famous momments of the 1905 Russian Revolution. The 24th of June the revolted sailors arrived in Constanța: they demanded food and fuel (charcoal), but were refused. They were granted impunity if they surrendered; which they did on the 25th of June, to the "Queen Elisabeta" battleship (whose cannons threatened to sink Potemkin).
Probably this CDV was taken during the search of the surrendered ship; it was used as a souvenir by one members of Elisabeta's crew.
