[Dated late 16th-century ms. inscription recording the gift of this volume from Caspar Elcner, a native of Merseburg, Germany, and pastor at Neustadtl (now Jezvé, Czech Republic) to Melchior Poppe (fl. 1570-1597), pastor at Hohlen (now Holany, Czech Republic) near Böhmisch-Leipa (now Česká Lípa). Poppe was a Catholic priest and a member of the Cistercian order who later converted to Lutheranism, under which confession he served at Hohlen. Poppe published Latin verses on the occasion of two weddings, one each in 1570 and 1571 (cf. VD 16 P 4255, ZV 12671), and a pair of funerary sermons in 1597 (cf. VD 16 ZV 12672).
