Unidentified ownership inscription of J. Dampier; ms. list of contents; a ms. bibliographic note attributing, probably in error, an ownership inscription to Heinsius

According to this ms. note this volume was owned by Heinsius with his mark of ownership ("Ton 'Einsius"). Heinsius could be either Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655), classical scholar and librarian of Leiden University Library or his son Nicolaas Heinsius (1620-1681) a Dutch philologist and poet and book collector whose large library was auctioned after his death with a catalog "Bibliotheca Heinsiana, sive, Catalogus librorum, quos magno studio & sumtu, dum viveret, collegit" (1682). The same edition of this work (Gnōmologiai palaiotatōn poiētōn) is listed on p. 75 of the " Bibliotheca Heinsiana" (Cf. books.google.com/books?id=P2Y7AAAAcAAJ&printsec=front... )

To complicate matters Harvard records that their copy of this title held at Houghton Library (OCLC #613850347) was owned by Nicolaas Heinsius and bears his ownership mark: Ex Biblioth. Heinsii Lugduni Batauor. CD D C LXXXIII. Other than the "Ton "Einsius" title page marking there are no other marks of ownership suggesting a Heinsius provenance nor does this copy have annotations. For these reasons it is not clear that this copy was actually owned by Heinsius unless there were 2 copies sold.

Perhaps the marking refers to a different Heinsius altogether or is simply a note stating that he (Nicolaas) owned a copy of this work.
