Falling Springs Falls
I got up this morning later than normal for a snow event due to a lack of confidence in what it would hold for my area. When I looked outside my suspect attitude was confirmed, about 1/2" and very little clinging to the trees. The temptation was to stay home since I have basically moved on from winter even if the weather has not yet. Figured what the hell, one last fling couldn't do any more harm than wasted time and gas. I knew the snow was packing more of a punch up north but the closest scenic spot that would work this day I have already shot to death in the snow, that being Apple Orchard Falls.
Headed over to Roaring Run first and shot the snow and stream there, surprised at the rather weak water flow of the falls since it's not like things have been dry here of late...but that's how most of our VA waterfalls roll, looking good for but a few days after wet weather and then go away. Little mountains= small watersheds. The wind was pretty bad here and I was trying some stacked shots since there was snow all over everything and the sky fairly interesting. Will take some time to process those.
Going for broke since I was 1/2 way to Falling Springs Falls, one of the nicer in VA, with some real question marks on the mountainous roads getting over there and whether or not the inevitable wind would crash things. The roads were not too bad but did require the first real snow driving, and when I started up the highway after Covington saw the most pristine and beautiful winter scenery yet! It was all great around the falls with very little wind.
Turbo, my 2 year old Border Collie was along and he doesn't like this place due to the boulder field one must negotiate down from the highway. He'll go almost anywhere but hates those rocks even without snow. I got on down and for awhile didn't know if I was going to be able to convince him to come on around through the woods, but he finally did it. The water was lower than my usual visits here which meant the spray was not as bad, it can severely limit things when the falls are really looking good. I hear a lot of lesser flow is OK and sometimes better stuff and I think that is just people displaying more of a positive attitude than I, making the most of what they get dealt. I like my waterfalls flowing very well, not flood stage, but good spring wet weather full.
One will never get this shot with a better water flow though. Could barely get it today and had to wait for the spray cloud to drift other ways before I could shoot. This is 2 horizontal shots stacked, didn't do a lot of work on the image since it's not a very colorful place this time of year and the warm springs fed stream generates so much heat it melts the snow away for quite a distance. This is one of the lesser comps I got there just thought I would throw it out first, need to get the others out quickly since as I said before I'm done with winter.
When I got back up top I got a little chuckle inside about these 2 other photographer guys that were probably 10 and 20 years younger than I and weren't about to go down to the bottom, one guy got 1/2 way down before going back and the other refused. I shot some more above the falls too.
I loved the music of the 80's and that's why I love so much of this new indie stuff, reminds me of then Dan Croll "From Nowhere"
