Niki Lauda at work . . .
Another one from the archives. My start in photography began as I was bumming around following the Formula One series in 1973-74 as much as possible.
This photo was taken at the Race of Champions in March, 1973 (42 years ago) at Brands Hatch. This was the beginning of Niki Lauda's Formula 1 career as he began driving for BRM.
This is a scan of a Kodachrome 64 slide. My camera at the time was a Pentax and the lens was a 2 piece 1000mm. The lens when assembled was nearly a meter long. All of my photos with this lens were hand held . . . I was young back then . . . who needed a tripod! :-) The focus is a bit soft at the front but spot on at the rear of the car . . . I still like it :-)
I situated myself so as to capture the drivers as they entered the hairpin at Druids. I would raise the camera and lens as I heard the cars coming up Hailwoods Hill. My left hand would be almost fully extended just to focus and support the lens. This is the entire image . . . nothing has been cropped.
A final note . . . I was able to get Niki Lauda to autograph an 8X10 of this image later that year at the British Grand Prix.
