Today I found a box turtle in our yard.
I knew we had about 10 species of turtles that are found in New Mexico but it's the first time I've found one. It was lifted up gently for a quick photo and immediately put back where I found it to carry on enjoying whatever it is turtles do. This one was enjoying eating our flowers. Whilst this particular box turtle is one is not endangered I believe they are considered vulnerable.
Quite a nice coincidence to find it on Endangered Species Day.
