Strangers 028/100
I heard Betty long before I saw her today in the supermarket. Her Mancunian* accent unmistakable. I couldn't resist talking to her. Originally from Manchester England she moved to New York with her husband. She doesn't remember exactly when as she said it was too many years ago. Some years later they separated but never bothered to divorce. One day Betty found out her husband died so she said she became a merry widow. Betty decided she wanted to live in New Mexico and has been here ever since. Her son still lives in Manchester England and she has asked him to come here to live but she said he wants to stay in Manchester. She has her daughter living here close by and her grandson so she said she is very lucky. To hear someone calling me 'love' was delightful (very English) and she loved that I was from Cornwall as she visited there once and thought it was so beautiful.
I noticed she had a box of Tetley Tea Bags in her shopping trolley. Her response "Of course love!" Now I promised Betty I wouldn't tell anyone how old she is. I just hope Betty if I make 91 years I'll be as astute and spritely as you!! It was an absolute delight talking to Betty, she made my day. I hope I meet her again I loved her and her memories she shared with me.
