New York Paramount Theater preparing for the world premiere of “Love Me Tender’ starring Elvis Presley in his first movie role (1956).
The film debuted on Thursday, November 15, 1956. Following this exclusive Broadway engagement, 20th Century Fox released the movie nationally a week later on November 21, rolling out a then-record-breaking 575 prints.
The movie played for a two-week run at the New York Paramount Theater. The theater heavily hyped the engagement, even building the massive, 40-foot cutout of Elvis above the marquee. While it brought in an immense wave of ecstatic teenagers and massive ticket sales during its opening days, attendance dropped significantly on weeknights. Variety ultimately noted that its Broadway run was somewhat of a box-office disappointment compared to the staggering numbers it generated when it finally hit local markets across the country for its wide national release.
