Robert Wilder’s 1942 novel “Flamingo Road” is a brutal novel of big-time vice, politics and corruption set in a Florida town run by a corrupt sheriff. Wilder turned it into a short-lived Broadway play in 1946, which lasted only 7 performances.
In 1949, Warner Brothers bought the rights to “Flamingo Road” and turned it into a feature film directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Joan Crawford, Zachary Scott, and Sydney Greenstreet. Lane Bellamy (played by Crawford) is a tough, cynical carnival dancer who attempts to move up the social ladder in the corrupt Florida hamlet of Bolden City. She falls in love with Fielding Carlisle (played by Zachary Scott), the political protégé of the town's big-daddy sheriff Titus Semple (Sidney Greenstreet). Semple regards Lane as a gold-digging troublemaker, and does his best to break up the romance, framing her on a trumped-up morals charge and having her shipped off to prison. NBC transformed the story into a weekly TV series during the ‘80s in the wake of the success of CBS’ prime time soaps “Dallas” and “Knots Landing.” First seen as a TV movie in May, 1980, the TV series “Flamingo Road” ran for 37 episodes from January, 1981 to May, 1982.
