Horsehead etc, around Zeta Ori
Canon EOS5DMkII 254mm Newtonian @ 1200mm 18 x 30s f/4.8 ISO6400 2010-12-11 23:10:27-23:21:37 UT

The star Zeta Orionis (the brightest one here, with large diffraction spikes from the telescope) is surrounded by nebulae. This photo is oriented with N to the left to make the Horsehead nebula more obvious. It is a dark cloud of dust obscuring the brighter emission nebula behind it.
Standard DSLR at prime focus of Newtonian, no filters. On HEQ5 mount, driven but not guided. A remarkably short exposure (9 minutes total). It was easy to get this from a dark site in the North Pennines, but quite impossible from suburbia (Tyneside).
