Arctic Adventure 2025
For 10 days in late May 2025, we explored the archipelagos of Svalbard, Norway with Quark Expeditions aboard the Ocean Explorer. At 80 degrees north, the Arctic Ice along with dozens of islands and fjords support polar bears, reindeer, walruses, foxes, and several avian species.
Unlike glaciers and icebergs sea ice is born in the ocean whereas glaciers are land based. Sea ice is incredibly dynamic. Think of it like the soil for the Arctic Ocean as it supports algae growth. This algae kickstarts the food web and feeds mollusks which is how walruses get fat.
It could be said that sea ice is the lifeblood of the arctic and a barometer for climate change.
For all its harshness and seemingly unforgiving landscape, this ecosystem remains vulnerable and begs the question; how do we transcend this knowledge into action for the next century and beyond?
